Plays in a Daze Signups

Updated 3/24/2019

Signups have closed. Please join us on May 26!

PCSF is excited to announce that the next installation of our annual fund-raising event Plays in a Daze will be held this year on May 25 and May 26, 2019. Plays will be written overnight starting Saturday, May 25, and then rehearsed and performed on Sunday, May 26. That's right, plays will be written, rehearsed and performed (off-book!) all in one day!

This is your chance to sign up to participate as:

  • a playwright,
  • an actor,
  • a director
  • or a crew member.

Please note: this year the festival will be held on Memorial Day weekend: that will allow many of us to rest and recover on the day after the fest. So, for all you working folks, this may be the most convenient fest ever!

You know you want to sign up for this event!!!! How often do you get to write a script for specific actors, based on specific prompts and then have your script performed off-book in front of a live (and paying!) audience on the very next day!!!

This is a total thrill ride. You want this. This is an exciting, fast and fun event - and it raises money for PCSF!

As in our previous 24 Hour Fests, eight (8) lucky playwrights will be selected. Applications for Playwrights, Actors and Directors are accepted from now until 11:59 pm on April 26th, 2019. To apply for possible selection as a playwright, actor or director, send an email to pcsf@playwrightscentersf.org by 11:59 pm on April 26, 2019.

To participate as a playwright in the Eight Plays in a Daze Fest, you must be a current member of PCSF (your dues must be current). Directors, actors, and crew do not need to be members of PCSF.

In brief:

8-9 playwrights will be chosen through a random drawing on April 26, 2019. Since the festival is now once-a-year (it was previously twice-a-year), all current-dues-paying PCSF members are eligible to apply (even those members who participated in the most recent 2018 fest).

On Saturday afternoon, May 25, the fest participants will gather, and a director and a cast will be randomly assigned to each playwright. A theme for the festival will also be chosen randomly (and some prompts may be added to the mix). Each playwright and their assigned cast and director will meet and get to know each other before the playwright heads off into the dark, lonely night to write a completely new, original script: written specifically for the assigned actors, inspired by the assigned theme, and incorporating the assigned prompt(s). Oh, and of course, the playwright will complete the play by 6:00 am Sunday morning.

Directors and Actors will arrive the next morning, Sunday, May 26, at 9:00 am for a mad day of rehearsals followed by a performance off-book that night at 7:30 pm!

We are excited to continue the tradition of the fest as an annual fundraiser. Unfortunately, as it is a fundraiser we can't afford to pay anyone, but we hope you will find the experience fun and rewarding!

Please note: since we are not paying the volunteers (including the actors and directors), Equity and other union members may not be able to participate as actors and stage management (we are working on getting Equity permission, and I will announce if and when Equity signs our request).

Once again, to apply for possible selection as a playwright, actor or director, please send an email to pcsf@playwrightscentersf.org by 11:59 pm on April 26, 2019.

Together we can make this the greatest fest and the most effective fundraiser ever! Let the fest begin!
